What's New?
Shez Show 1.9c 5/3/96
OOPS! SHEZFAIL.BAT & MAXFAIL.BAT. The exiting errorlevel was NOT set
if GET.EXE timed out without keyboard input. I change the way GET was
used in the files.
Added REDATE.BAT file listed in the SHEZS.INI file. REDATE.BAT uses
GET.EXE and CHANGEIT.EXE to redate files in archives.
Took out the BEEP when each virus scanner failed. Added a second BEEP
in :TEST section (after ALL virus scanners finished).
Added /NOBEEP to SCAN.EXE command line in SHEZSET.BAT & MAXSCAN.BAT.
Added /Q to AVSCAN.EXE command line in SHEZSET.BAT & MAXSCAN.BAT.
Shez Show 1.9b 5/1/96
New file in archive named SHEZSHOW.NEW. Moved the "What's New" section
to that file. The SHEZSHOW.TXT file will only contain the numbered
enhancement suggestions. Renamed SHEZSET.TXT to SHEZSET.NEW. The file
contains the What's New section for SHEZSET.BAT in a more 'detailed'
listing.
Added an optional call to UNP.EXE in SHEZSCAN.BAT. See SHEZSET.NEW.
Cleaned up SHEZFAIL.BAT (Echoed "ok" to CHECKOUT.LOG). GET.EXE is
optional but you MUST use some program to set the errorlevel <> 0 if you
want SHEZ to know that the virus scan failed.
Improved MAXSCAN.BAT and MAXFAIL.BAT. Added NODDA, NOSUB, MEM options
to replace MAXSCAN2.BAT, MAXSCAN3.BAT and the ability to just scan BOOT
sectors AND Memory. Removed MAXSCAN2.BAT and MAXSCAN3.BAT from the
ShezShow archive.
Changed DEEPSCAN.BAT to allow using GET.EXE to change back to
the drive:\dir you were in when you started DEEPSCAN.BAT. If GET.EXE is
not in your path, you will get two "bad command or filename..." messages
and you will be placed in the drive: \dir you were scanning. The Change
to the drive: \dir only happens if DEEPSCAN.BAT attempts to scan files.
Found a problem when loading SHEZA.BAT from Windows. It appears that
Windows considers the SHEZ directory to be present even when it is not
and only an environment variable is present. DOS 6.22 does not have
this problem. I don't know of a work around for this yet.
SET SHEZ=C:\NOT_HERE
IF EXIST \SHEZ\PRN ECHO Path is present.
Found another problem when launching ANY DOS program from Windows (3.x).
Apparently, Windows loads a copy of COMMAND.COM with the default
environment size. Since I use the environment to store information
during virus scanning, Windows kept causing DOS to run out of
environment space. I worked around this by using
SET GET=This is a very large string to give Windows more env space.
just before I load Windows. At the top of any Batch file that you run
while in Windows, just add the line
SET GET=
This will free up environment space for Windows to use. If someone knows
of a better way to do this or a way to alter DOS 6.22 COMMAND.COM for a
larger default environment space, please let me know.
Removed CKOTSCAN.BAT and CKOTFAIL.BAT from the ShezShow archive. They
were not used by SHEZ. They were identical to SHEZSCAN.BAT and
SHEZFAIL.BAT except that "CKOT" was replaced by "SHEZ".
Other files were changed/updated slightly to the settings I am currently
using.
Shez Show 1.9a 4/18/96
A trick with the command line... Adding '*' to a filename.ext.
SHEZ Opens an archive if it is on the command line. This can be
overcome by adding and '*' after the three character extension.
See enhancement 7) for more information.
Added SHEZAZ.MAC which is the macro to virus scan ALL files displayed in
the File Window. (Tag All files and press ALT-Z.)
Corrected the text in enhancement 5) to show the addition of
"COMMAND /C" which is now required for calls to all internal DOS
commands.
Added DEEPSCAN.BAT to the ShezShow archive. This batch file was created
for a friend who wanted the ability to scan EVERY file in a specified
directory. It will use the first of four virus scanning methods found
(or the specified method) to virus scan files. Just run DEEPSCAN.BAT
for a simple help display or view it with any text viewer or editor.
Shez Show 1.9 3/28/96
Changed an entry in my uSer Menu for a call to an internal DOS command.
Previously a command (such as DIR) could be used with no problem. Now
the command must use COMMAND /CDIR to work. See SHEZS.INI sample.
ThunderByte Anti-Virus 7.0 now has better detection than ever. Once
again TBSCAN can scan allfiles without the dreaded pause. See SHEZSET.NEW
for more details.
AVScan was removed (then readded) to SHEZSET.BAT. See SHEZSET.NEW for
more details.
MCAfee Assts /FAST option is no longer used. See SHEZSET.NEW for more
details.
Updated SHEZS.INI showing my current SHEZ.INI file.
Added MAXSCAN?.BAT and CLEANOUT.BAT files referred to in the SHEZS.INI
file. These batch files use GET.EXE (batch file enhancer) and PCOPY.EXE
(Parquillium (sp) file copy utility) to augment Shez in virus scanning
and file coping/moving. MAXSCAN.BAT scans subdirectories, MAXSCAN2.BAT
does NOT scan subdirectories, MAXSCAN3.BAT uses McAfee Assts SCAN /NODDA
switch to allow it to scan my RAM disk.
SHEZFAIL.BAT, CKOTFAIL.BAT, MAXFAIL.BAT were all changed to guarantee
that if ANY virus scanner found a virus then GET.EXE is used to force
the errorlevel to <> 0 to let SHEZ, CHECKOUT, or MAXSCAN?.BAT know that
it found a virus. Previously, if the first virus scanner found a virus
but the last one did not find a virus the errorlevel was still = 0 so
Shez did not see the failure. You should be able to use just about any
batch enhancer to duplicate what I did with GET.EXE.
Shez Show 1.8h 8/24/95
I removed support for McAfee Assts Scan V118 in the SHEZSET.BAT program.
I renamed the McAfee Assts Scan 2.x.x program from SCAN2.EXE to
SCAN.EXE. All references to SCAN.EXE in SHEZSET.BAT now refer to the
Version 2.2.x of McAfee Assts Virus Scanner. Keep a copy of your old
files if you still want to use McAfee Assts V1xx program. The switches
are different.
Shez Show 1.8g 8/3/95
Two changes for this one. First I have added notes on a new uSer Menu
option (Freshen/Extract). This is used for ZIP files to Extract ONLY
NEWER files that already exist in the destination directory.
See suggestion 6).
TBScan CAN be told to scan for ALLFILES without the dreaded Warning and
PAUSE. See SHEZSET.NEW for the latest changes.
I have now started to see SHEZSH*.ZIP on several of the latest CDs that
have been released. Glad to know someone thinks this work is good enough.
Shez Show 1.8f 6/27/95
Changes made to SHEZSET.BAT concerning TBScan virus scanner.
The problem with ThunderByte and the AF switch is not a problem when
Shez just scans an archive. It does make a difference when scanning
Extract and Current Directories. See SHEZSET.NEW for more information.
Added BEEP (CTRL-G) to SHEZFAIL.BAT and CKOTFAIL.BAT files. Not all
virus scanners beep when they find a virus. This will insure that your
are beeped each time a virus scanner exits with an error level > 0.
Suggestion 4) has been removed. Shez 10.6 started using the RENAME
function when moving files on the same drive.
Internet mailing address: darrell.bivens@silver.org
for feedback concerning SHEZSHOW archive.
Shez Show 1.8e 6/6/95
ThunderBYTE 6.34 note added to SHEZSET.NEW. Concerns a problem with the
way TBScan processes multiple directories. See SHEZSET.NEW for more details.
Included SHEZS.INI a partial sample of the SHEZ.INI file (only the User
Menu section) for reference.
Shez Show 1.8d 3/6/95
ThunderBYTE 6.33 was released and it changed the way it works - again.
The work around for the AF switch does not work now. See SHEZSET.NEW for
more details.
Shez Show 1.8c 2/20/95
I found the work around for ThunderBYTE Anti-Virus switch Allfiles (AF)
that causes a pause. See SHEZSET.NEW for more details.
Shez Show 1.8b 2/7/95
ThunderBYTE changed their Allfiles switch operation again. See
SHEZSET.NEW for more details.
Shez Show 1.8a 1/16/95
Changed switch for SCAN V117 (See SHEZSET.NEW)
Shez Show 1.8 1/9/95
Changed the name of the archive to SHEZS18.ZIP. This allows me to update
with minor revisions (like SHEZS18B.ZIP). Updated some samples in
SHEZSHOW.TXT to what is currently in use. Changed references below in
ShezShow 1.6. The $CD and $ED are the same but the others are not.
The $EP and $CP does not include the drive letter and it does include
the trailing backslash.
Shez Show 1.7b 11/21/94 Slight wording in SHEZFAIL.BAT & CKOTFAIL.BAT
Shez Show 1.7a 11/7/94 Added /V to AVScan command line in SHEZSET.BAT.
Shez Show 1.7 10/12/94
The archive was renamed for this change. Added FILE_ID.DIS and DESC.SDI
files to the archive for easier uploading to BBSs that use these.
Added AVScan virus scanner to the SHEZSET.BAT file. Rewording and added
paragraph above. Several changes in SHEZSET.BAT file (see SHEZSET.NEW
for the details).
----------
Shez Show 1.6 9/1/94
The archive was renamed for this change. I Goofed. On ShezShow 1.5 I
changed some $CD $CP and $ED $EP references. I did not fully understand
these variables (until now).
_VARIABLE___________ ________________SAMPLES___________________
$CD = Current Drive: (A: B: C:)
$CP = Current Path (\TEMP\ \TEST\ \HOLD\)
$ED = Extract Drive: (A: B: C:)
$ED = Extract Path (\TEMP\ \TEST\ \HOLD\)
$F = File (A:\FIRST.ZIP C:\HOLD\TEST\TEMP\LAST.ZIP)
Create a File List for other programs to use. (#5 at bottom).
No changes to SHEZSET.BAT file.
----------
Shez Show 1.5a 8/18/94
The archive was not renamed for this change. ThunderBYTE Anti-Virus
6.23 was released recently. This version corrected one 'difference'
that was documented as a possible problem in the SHEZSET.NEW file.
No changes to SHEZSET.BAT file.
----------
Shez Show 1.5 7/11/94 (See ShezShow 1.6 for Correct usage)
Archive renamed SHEZSH15.ZIP for this change. Documented the Fast Move
command hidden in the RENAME (and RENAME TAGGED) options.
Corrected several sample SHEZ.INI entries adding the $CD to $CP and
adding the $ED to the $EP. If you tried to scan from A:\ (extract path)
after loading Shez from C:, the resulting scan was on C:\!!!
No changes to SHEZSET.BAT file.
----------
Shez Show 1.4 6/30/94
Archive renamed SHEZSH14.ZIP for this change. McAfee Assts. just
released their SCAN 2.1.0 (Release Candidate) virus scanner. This update
changes the switches for SCAN2 by adding /ALL (See SHEZSET.NEW).
----------
Shez Show 1.3b 6/27/94
The archive was not renamed for this change. Changed the order of the
F-Prot options that are ECHOed (See SHEZSET.NEW). Corrected a little
wording in the SHEZSET.NEW file. Saved all the files in this archive
with the 6/27/94 date.
----------
Shez Show 1.3a 6/20/94
The archive was not renamed for this change. A small amount of
information about some differences in F-Prot virus scanner and about
some differences in ThunderBYTE virus scanner was added to the
SHEZSET.NEW file. If you use either of these viri scanners, you should
read this information as it affects the 'Quality' of the virus scanning
process.
----------
Shez Show 1.3 6/8/94
a) Now virus scanning is better than ever in Shez.
I revised the SHEZSET.BAT file that creates the SHEZSCAN.BAT file. It
can now setup SHEZSCAN.BAT for one or ALL of the four Viri scanners that
I know about: ThunderByte 6.20, F-Prot 2.12, Scan V115, and Scan 2.0.2.
(See the SHEZSET.NEW file for a detailed explanation of how to setup and
use the SHEZSET.BAT file)
b) Rewrote this text file in an easier to use format. The top section
will be a 'quick' review of what was changed [a) - z)] and the
enhancement suggestions will be numbered [1) - x)] below that section.
c) Corrected an entry in SHEZA.BAT file that loaded Shez in the wrong
directory.
----------
Shez Show 1.2 4/27/94
Developed a method of using different virus scanners by using a batch
file SHEZSCAN.BAT file and SHEZSET.BAT to change the virus scanner.
Added sample SHEZSET.BAT and SHEZSCAN.BAT files to this archive.
----------
Shez Show 1.1 4/20/94
Initial release of Shez Show to the public.
SHEZSHOW.TXT file contains three suggestions showing how to enhance the
use of Shez.
SHEZA.BAT as an alternate viewer!
SHEZA.BAT as a uSer program!
How to use alternate virus scanners in Shez uSer Menu
